Donor-Advised Fund

Make a Gift with a Donor-Advised Fund

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a centralized vehicle for charitable giving. It allows individuals, families, and corporations to make irrevocable donations to nonprofits such as Population Connection.

The Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is an increasingly popular way to make a charitable gift. A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) allows you to make a charitable gift through a dedicated charitable investment account for an immediate income-tax deduction in that year. You can donate directly to Population Connection using your DAF or even cement your legacy of support by designating us as the beneficiary of your fund.

Creating a Donor-Advised Fund

Creating a Donor-Advised Fund can provide you with immediate tax benefits while making your charitable giving easier for years to come.

How It Works

You establish a Donor-Advised Fund at a sponsoring charity. This could be a community foundation, a public charity with a Donor-Advised Fund program, or even one of the well-known financial services companies that sponsor Donor-Advised Funds. Check with the sponsor about the minimum contribution required to start a Donor-Advised Fund, which typically range from $5,000 to $25,000. The sponsor may allow you to give your Donor-Advised Fund a unique name. Then, make an initial contribution to start your Fund. You can contribute cash or appreciated assets such as stocks or mutual funds. You’ll get an immediate income tax charitable deduction for your contribution that could reduce your taxes if you itemize.

Once established and funded, you can recommend that your favorite public charities, such as Population Connection, receive grants from your Donor-Advised Fund. Most Donor-Advised Funds have a minimum grant recommendation, or you can recommend distributing the entire balance of your Donor-Advised Fund for a cause important to you.

You do not get an additional income tax charitable deduction for these grants.

You can also create a succession plan with your Fund sponsor to recommend that some or all of the remaining assets in your fund at your passing go to Population Connection and other charities that are important to you.

Population Connection is grateful for grants that come from Donor-Advised Funds. If you are considering establishing a Donor-Advised Fund, we can suggest several sponsors for your review. You should also consult your professional advisor for guidance.

Leaving a Legacy with your DAF

You’ve established a donor-advised fund (DAF) to benefit your favorite charities, but what happens to its remaining assets after your lifetime? Make your DAF part of your legacy plan today!

You can ensure your DAF continues benefiting the charities you value most through:

  1. Beneficiary Designation – You can take action today and name Population Connection as a beneficiary to receive any (or all) of the remaining assets in your DAF account. This is a quick, easy, and impactful way to create a lasting legacy. A DAF beneficiary form is used to designate who will receive the assets of your DAF after your lifetime. Contact your sponsoring institution to request a beneficiary form and specify how you’d like your funds to be distributed after your lifetime.
  2. Successor Advisor(s) – In some cases, you can appoint a family member or friend as a successor to continue making charitable contributions from the account on your behalf.

If you include Population Connection in your plans, please let us know and be sure to use our legal name and federal tax ID.

Legal Name:  Population Connection
Address:  2120 L Street, NW STE 500, Washington, DC 20037
Federal Tax ID Number: 94-1703155

What happens if you don’t designate a beneficiary?

Without establishing a succession plan, it’s possible that your sponsoring organization will take over your account as an “Orphaned DAF,” allowing them to have discretion over any residual funds in the account. They could roll your DAF into their own general fund, or distribute them to other charitable causes, however they deem fit.

By creating a beneficiary designation, you can ensure that your intentions are honored and your support for organizations like Population Connection will continue well past your lifetime.

Environmental and socioeconomic benefits

Women who have reproductive autonomy generally choose to have smaller families. This slows population growth and creates opportunities for social, economic, and environmental improvements. Slower population growth reduces pressures on natural resources, habitats, and food systems. Within the context of climate change, slowing population growth is key to achieving greenhouse gas emissions targets, and the health, education, and economic benefits afforded through family planning help reduce climate vulnerability and increase resilience for communities around the world.

Health benefits

When women and couples have access to the resources necessary to freely and intentionally choose the number, timing, and spacing of their births, a wide variety of health benefits ensue also, including reductions in maternal mortality and morbidity, infant and child mortality, and unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortions.
